Ugg boots - fashion statement or fashion faux pas

Over the last 5 years there has only been one practical boot that everyone has hankered after - the Ugg boot. They are goatskin boots with a sheepskin lining and usually a synthetic sole. They are extremely warm and comfortable, promising to wick moisture away from the body whilst insulating your feet against the elements. Designed to be worn without socks to maximise the properties of the sheepskin, Uggs are versatile and can be worn with bare legs, tights, shorts, trousers and skirts and by both men and women. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor wear as they won't mark your floor. Accept no imitations, always buy the real deal!

The first celebrity who kicked off the Ugg trend was Pamela Anderson, who wore her Uggs between takes on the set of Baywatch to keep her feet warm. This is the original purpose for Uggs, where Australian surfers would wear the boots to stay warm out of the water. In the last few years the likes of Kate Hudson, Mischa Barton, Colleen McLoughlin, Sienna Miller and Geri Halliwell have been seen to be inseparable from their Uggs. It's hard to decide if Uggs are for you when famous fashionistas such as Sienna Miller favour them at the same time as famous fashion disasters like Colleen McLoughlin. To avoid looking Ugg-ly then almost always wear your boots with legs covered. It is fine to team your Uggs with a tiny mini skirt but wear tights or leggings with them. Use the same rule for wearing with shorts. A fantastic bang-on-trend Winter look is wearing your Ugg boots with skinny jeans. The combination of tan or beige boots and navy skinny jeans looks fantastic and will keep you toasty-warm, comfy and stylish all day long when you are out Christmas shopping. If you do choose to wear your Uggs with bare legs then try a boho look by teaming a simple plain mini-dress with the black knee-high design boots. Keep accessories simple and you'll look effortlessly stylish and be oh-so-comfortable.

Another rule to always stick to is to keep it casual in Uggs. They're so cosy and such a fashion staple these days that it might be tempting to take risks and team your boots with a variety of outfits but sadly there are no Uggs that will look good on a glamorous night out. Uggs were built for the outdoors and not for pretty party dresses. If it's party time, stick to heels...but keep your Uggs in a bag in case you have to walk home.

It's not just the female celebrities who are wearing Uggs. It's a pretty controversial subject...are men in Uggs acceptable? Designer Matthew Williamson seems to think so and is regularly seen out in his fleecy boots. Somewhat more surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio is also an Ugg-fan and has been seen in recent months proudly sporting his own comfy pair of tan goatskin boots. So whether Ugg boots are a fashion faux-pas for men remains to be seen, but don't expect your fella to be seen out in a pair any time soon.
