Potted History ... The first Woolworth's store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth in America, it was one of the original five-and-dime stores. Woolworths sold discounted general merchandise at fixed prices, usually five or ten cents. In 1910, Frank Woolworth commissioned the construction of the Woolworth Building in New York. It was completed in 1913 and was the tallest building in the world until 1930. Woolworths started out in the UK in 1909, and sold children's clothing, stationery and toys. Woolworths is now owned by the Shop Direct Group.
